Overview of Annapurna Base Camp Trek

With a land size of 7629 square miles and an elevation range of 790 to 8091 meters, the Annapurna Conservation size is the biggest protected region in Nepal. Its varied topography creates an intricate landscape. The Annapurna Base Camp Trek, regarded as one of the most well-liked hiking trails in Nepal, is located inside the protected area.

At 4130 meters, the Annapurna Base Camp is the ultimate stop, and it requires 7–12 days to finish. The path is highly valued since it is encircled by the four giant Himalayan mountains: Machapuchare (6993 m), Hiunchuli (6441 m), Annapurna I (8091 m), and Annapurna South (7219 m). Relative to other base camp treks around the glacier, this one is a comparatively simple hike to access.

There are several routes that can be followed, based on the hiker’s time constraints and desired sights. From Pokhara, the path leads to the village of Ghandruk, then to Chomrong, Dovan, and lastly to the Annapurna Base Camp, passing via Machapuchare Base Camp en route. Our route strategy aims to minimize the likelihood of high altitude sickness, which might manifest symptoms when an individual ascends 300 meters or more in a single day.

The celebrated Annapurna base camp trek begins in the verdant hilly lowlands and ascends to the Himalayan region at the foothills of the Annapurna Himalayan range. Once you reach the lap of the mountain, you will be treated to breathtaking panoramas of the region’s mountains.

The sensation of living in the center of the Himalayas is indescribable. We will have breathtaking views of Annapurna I, the very first mountain above 8000 meters to be ascended in history, which was achieved by a French team in 1950. Before reaching the Himalayan heights, the Annapurna Base Camp travels through several villages of various ethnic groups with distinct customs and ways of life, terraced farms, and Rhododendron forests.

The trekking route itself is an amazingly tranquil experience as the paths come alive with the chirping of birds, monkeys chattering high up in the trees, waterfalls cascading down the rough hills, and chilly air running past your face.

To take you on an adventure to such a magical destination, we have come up with an Annapurna Base Camp Trek package that is sure to provide the ultimate experience with an affordable cost. Stick around as we discuss all the aspects of this trek package starting with highlights and detailed itinerary.

Trip Information - Good to Know

How does the trek begin?

The trek officially begins after you land at the international airport in Kathmandu. You will be escorted to your designated accommodation by our representative who will let you in on the next step. The next day, you will meet the crew members who will be assisting you for the entire duration of the trek. Our crew members are well-experienced at what they do, so you don’t have to worry about them messing up things during the trek.

You can actually change the itinerary of this trek as per your preferences and time restraints. One of the best things about this trek is the versatile duration. You can choose the trek to last for weeks or less than a week based on the time that you can spare. Plus you can also add a couple of nearby destinations that you would want to visit.

If you like our main itinerary well enough, you can just choose that without having to work out any alternative itinerary. Also, our itinerary is designed to prevent altitude sickness.

The trekking days begin on the 4th day of the itinerary. Prior to that, you will be spending your time in Kathmandu and Pokhara city. Our itinerary will take you to a bunch of villages including, the most famous Gurung village of Ghandruk, Chhomrong, Birethanti, Ulleri, Dova, Jhinudada, and more. These villages are not only a stop for the trekkers but also a cultural settlement.

Our trekking day ends on the 11th day of the itinerary. Following that you will return back to Kathmandu and ultimately back home.

Difficulty

Compared to most other Base Camp hikes in Nepal, the climb to Annapurna Base Camp is comparatively easy. The explanation for this is that walking to Annapurna Base Camp necessitates shorter hiking days, maximum heights of 4130 m, and a minimal number of days spent at greater altitudes.

The Annapurna Base Camp walk starts in Pokhara, at an elevation of 850 meters, giving ample time for acclimatization. Despite being a very straightforward hike, the Annapurna Base Camp requires some level of endurance. The seven days of hiking, which include several ascending and descending hikes, are the only thing that makes the voyage difficult.

Best seasons

There are two primary trekking periods: the spring, which runs from March to May, and the fall, which runs from September to November. Trekking is best done during these seasons because of the normally dry, consistent weather with clear skies and adequate visibility.

The Annapurna Base Camp trip is most popular during springtime because of the pleasant weather and vibrant scenery created by the rhododendron blooms in full bloom. The trek is also very well-liked in the fall because of the clear, consistent weather and generally breathtaking vistas of the mountains. Unlike in the spring, hiking paths are less busy and the outdoor temperatures are lower at this time of year.

Can a beginner join this trip?

Sure. Beginners are encouraged to join this trip as it provides one of the best views of the Himalayan region of Nepal while also being an easy trek. Even first-timers can do this trek without any prior experience of trekking at all. However, everyone who plans on trekking this trek should have a basic level of fitness, whether it be a professional trekker or a beginner.

Plus, our porters will carry the luggage for you so you can focus on hiking solely. That should help you significantly.

Altitude Sickness

While trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, altitude sickness is definitely a possibility. The air gets thinner and contains less oxygen as you navigate higher into the Himalayan region. Acute mountain sickness (AMS), another name for altitude sickness, can happen when your body is unable to adapt appropriately to the shifting altitude.

It is critical to be wary of the signs and take the appropriate precautions to reduce the danger. The preventive measures include acclimatizing as per the standard practices and keeping yourself well-hydrated for the entirety of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Accommodation, Food and Drink

The lodging on the Annapurna base camp trek is rather comfortable, maybe a little better than on other base camp trips. When it comes to spending the night during the trekking days, we will always pick the nicest guest houses and inns. The nicest lodge has reserved rooms with two single beds, adequate bathroom amenities, and, if available, solar showers with hot water.

But because there aren’t as many amenities at much higher altitudes, the higher we go, the less facilities we have. As we climb higher beyond Bamboo and head for the Annapurna base camp, the lodging options will become more primitive, with communal restrooms and bucket showers. We will find dorm rooms typically for accommodation, that have two to four beds each.

The typical Nepalese dish Dal Bhat (Lentils and Rice) with veggies/meat side dishes is served in every guest home. There is a wide selection of meals available at every eatery along our itineraries, including rice, veggies, noodles, meats, and stir-fried goods. The menus of many of them feature Western cuisine. The majority of the lodges and trailside eateries serve beer, cider, soft beverages, and munchies.

We constantly have major concerns about food safety. For our itineraries, we have selected the most sanitary and cleanly maintained hotel. Furthermore, as meats might deteriorate in transit from urban areas to these remote areas, we advise against consuming any form of meat while on the hike. If the meats are locally sourced, you could go for it without thinking twice.

As for the drinks, we will not be covering any drinks-related expenses including water. However, we will be providing a hot cup of coffee each day during the trekking days.

Transportation

Transportation required during the trek wil be provided by us and will be a part of the package, meaning you will not have to pay anything for them. This includes traveling to Pokhara from Kathmandu and back on tourist bus, transport to the starting point of the trek, and pick up from the ending point of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

We will also escort you to and from the international airport on the first day and last day of the trek.

Permit

The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) are the two permits required to hike on this trek. Trekkers’ security and protection are ensured by the TIMS permit, which aids in recording their details.

All hikers who intend to hike in the Annapurna Conservation Area must get an ACAP permit. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) department in Kathmandu and Pokhara is the one that issues this permission.

Pricing

We have priced our Annapurna Base Camp Trek fairly, at an affordable rate of $1250 per person. Given the facilities and services we provide during the trek, this is a justifiable cost.

Trip preparation and fitness

This route can be finished by hikers who can cover 6 to 7 hours of moderate hiking with a small hiking bag. There are days when you need to walk for longer. Because trekking at greater elevations is physically hard, you have to be somewhat fit.

Trekking will be more enjoyable if you are in better shape. Provided you are in excellent shape, have a decent physique, a cheerful outlook, and confidence in yourself, you can finish the journey.

Gadgets charging & Internet

You will be able to charge your devices for the most part of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek and the same goes for the internet. Most of the lodges have internet facilities but they might charge you a couple of dollars for letting you use their WiFi and also for charging your gadgets.

If you do not want to pay for Wifi, you can choose to use your data connection from your cellular device instead. However, you may not get good reception all the way through.

Your Extra expenses

Your extra expenses include additional stay in Nepal, visa fees, any kind of flights, hot showers during accommodation at lodges, meals except breakfast while in Pokhara and Kathmandu, travel and medical insurance, tips for the crew members, and anything that we have not mentioned that the package covers.

What to Expect

You can expect this trip to be the ideal mix between the easy Ghorepani trek and the harder EBC trek. Therefore, ABC has everything it takes to thrill, astound, and fascinate you, regardless of your inclinations. Regardless of your level of competence, this journey provides a very gratifying and hard experience that both beginners and seasoned trekkers can enjoy.

A successful and pleasurable journey requires appropriate physical preparation, mental fortitude, the right equipment, a moderate rise with enough rest and drink, and correct planning. You can expect to travel with a certified guide, and you should make sure you have all the documentation and permissions needed for a secure trip.
